Glossary
The terms that come up when a code does not scan. Each entry explains what the thing does and what happens when it is wrong, because that is usually why somebody is looking it up.
- Quiet zoneThe blank margin around a QR code, four modules wide. What it does, why cropping it breaks scanning, and how wide it needs to be.
- Error correctionThe four QR error correction levels, how much damage each recovers, and why a higher level is not automatically a better choice.
- Finder patternThe three corner squares in a QR code: what they do, why there are exactly three, and why damage to one breaks the code completely.
- ModuleThe individual squares that make up a QR code. How module size decides scanning distance, and the rule of thumb for print sizing.
- Dynamic QR codeWhat a dynamic QR code is, how the redirect works, what happens if you stop paying, and when a static code is the better choice.
- Static QR codeA QR code that carries its content directly. What that means for permanence, cost and privacy, and why it cannot be edited after printing.
- QuishingPhishing through QR codes: why a printed square hides its destination, how swapped stickers work, and how to check a code before acting on it.
- GS1 Digital LinkThe standard that lets one 2D code serve both the checkout and the customer, replacing the barcode with a web address that still scans at the till.
