SMS QR code generator

An SMS code opens the messaging app with your number in the To field and, if you want, the message already typed. The sender presses send. It is the lowest-friction way to collect a reply from somebody standing in front of a sign.

SMS works on every phone ever made, with no app to install and no account to have. That is its advantage over every chat platform, and the reason it still belongs on a car park sign.

What should it do

Open a text message, pre-addressed and pre-written.

Why this uses SMSTO and not sms:

There are two ways to encode a text message, and they are not equally supported. The sms: URI scheme is the one in the standards, but the way the message body is attached differs by platform — some builds expect sms:number?body=, others sms:number&body= — so the same code behaves differently on different phones.

SMSTO:number:message is the older convention from QR scanner apps, and it is the one both iOS and Android reliably understand. This generator emits SMSTO for that reason. It is a case where the widely implemented format beats the correct one.

The number format, and what it costs the sender

Write the number in full international form with a leading plus. The generator strips spaces and brackets but keeps the plus, because a national-format number fails for anyone roaming or on a foreign SIM.

Remember the sender pays. A standard mobile number costs them a normal message; a premium or short-code number may cost considerably more, and printing one without saying so is the kind of thing that generates complaints rather than leads. If the number is anything other than standard rate, say so beside the code.

Keywords are what make this useful

Pre-fill a short keyword rather than a sentence: "PARK 4417" for a bay number, "STOCK X400" for a product enquiry, "JOIN" for a mailing list opt-in. Short keywords are easy to route automatically and survive being retyped.

Keep the whole message under about 60 characters. Longer text bloats the code, and anything the sender has to scroll past to add their own words gets deleted first.

Where SMS still wins

Car parks, roadside signs, farm gates, rural noticeboards — anywhere the phone might have one bar and no data. A text sends on a signal too weak to load a web page, which is exactly the situation where somebody needs to reach you.

It also reaches people who do not have WhatsApp, do not use email on their phone and will not install anything. For a broad public audience, that matters more than the interface being plain.

Common questions

Does an SMS QR code send the message automatically?
No. It opens the messaging app with the number and wording filled in, and the sender presses send. They can edit the message first, and nothing is sent if they close the app.
Why do some SMS QR codes not pre-fill the message?
Because they use the sms: URI scheme, where platforms disagree about whether the body is attached with a question mark or an ampersand. This generator uses the SMSTO format instead, which both iOS and Android understand consistently.
Who pays for the text message?
The person sending it, at their normal rate for a standard mobile number. If you use a premium or short-code number, print the cost beside the code — people reasonably expect a standard-rate message.
Does an SMS QR code work without mobile data?
Yes, which is its main advantage. A text sends over the cellular network on a signal too weak to load a web page, so it works in car parks, rural sites and basements where a link would fail.
How long should the pre-filled message be?
Under about 60 characters. A short keyword like PARK 4417 is easy to route, keeps the code sparse, and leaves room for the sender to add their own words without scrolling past a template.
