Plain text QR code generator
A plain text code carries words and nothing else. Scanning it shows the message on screen — no page opens, no app launches, nothing is sent anywhere. It is the right choice when the information is the point.
Machine settings, a serial number, dosage instructions, a safety warning in three languages, the wifi password written out for somebody whose phone will not scan the wifi code: all cases where the content should simply appear.
What should it do
Show a message without opening anything.
Content
Shorter text makes a smaller code, which scans from further away.
Design
What happens when somebody scans it
Because there is no scheme — no https:, no mailto: — the phone has nothing to act on, so it displays the contents and usually offers to copy, search or share them. That is the entire behaviour, and it is the same on iOS and Android.
This makes plain text the most predictable type there is. Nothing depends on which app is installed, which account is signed in, or whether there is a network. A plain text code works in a basement with no signal.
How much text actually fits
The generator here accepts up to 2,000 characters, which is more than fits comfortably on a scannable label. The theoretical ceiling of a QR symbol is about 4,296 alphanumeric characters at the lowest error correction, but a code that size is a version 40 symbol with 177 modules per side and needs to be printed very large and very cleanly.
There is a trick worth knowing: QR has an alphanumeric mode that packs uppercase letters, digits and a handful of punctuation at 5.5 bits per character, against 8 bits for anything else. Text written in uppercase with no lowercase letters can encode roughly 40 percent more in the same symbol. For a serial number or a part code, writing it in uppercase genuinely makes the code sparser.
Keep it short enough to read
The practical limit is not the format, it is the camera. Two hundred characters produce a comfortable code; two thousand produce a dense grid that needs good light, a steady hand and a decent lens. If you are encoding an essay, encode a link to the essay instead.
For anything long, a dynamic code pointing at a landing page is better in every way: unlimited length, formatting, the ability to correct a typo after printing, and you find out whether anyone read it.
Where plain text beats a link
On equipment that outlives websites. A pump installed in 2026 may still be running in 2046, and a code carrying its model number and service interval will still say so long after any URL printed beside it has stopped resolving.
In places with no signal — plant rooms, tunnels, ships, remote sites — where a link is useless and text is not. And anywhere the information must not depend on a company still existing, which for safety notices is the whole point.
Common questions
- Does a text QR code open a website?
- No. There is no scheme in the payload, so the phone has nothing to open. It displays the text on screen and usually offers to copy or share it. Nothing is sent anywhere and no app launches.
- How much text can a QR code hold?
- This generator accepts up to 2,000 characters. A QR symbol can technically hold around 4,296 alphanumeric characters, but a code that dense has to be printed very large and very cleanly to scan at all.
- Why does uppercase text make a smaller code?
- QR has an alphanumeric mode covering uppercase letters, digits and some punctuation, which packs about 5.5 bits per character instead of 8. Text with no lowercase letters can fit roughly 40 percent more into the same symbol.
- Does a text QR code work without internet?
- Yes, completely. The words are inside the pattern, so nothing is fetched. That is why plain text is the right choice for plant rooms, tunnels and equipment labels where there may be no signal at all.
- Can I put a password in a text QR code?
- You can, but treat it as public. Anyone who photographs the code can read it, and unlike a password on a screen it stays readable for as long as the print exists. For network access, a WiFi code on an isolated guest network is the safer pattern.
